March 22, 2025 – A Day of Remembrance and Connection

22/03/2025

On this March 22, 2025, nine years after the attacks that marked Belgium, V-Europe was once again present to honor the memory of the victims, support their loved ones, and remind everyone of the importance of solidarity in the face of terrorism.

The day began at Zaventem Airport with a minute of silence, a simple yet powerful gesture in this highly symbolic location. We then proceeded to the Maelbeek metro station, another site of attack, to show our solidarity with those who continue to live with the visible and invisible scars of these events.

The official event organized by the Prime Minister's Chancellery took place in a completely redeveloped Schuman Square. The new pedestrian area highlights the commemorative monument, now accessible in a more open, tranquil space conducive to reflection.

During the ceremony, victims of various attacks represented all those affected directly or indirectly by these events through a flower-laying gesture. This silent symbol carried the weight of memory, unity, and dignity.

This year, special tribute was paid to frontline services. Two strong figures partnered with our association: a police officer who responded in the initial minutes at the Maelbeek metro station, and a soldier from the unit who arrived shortly after the explosions at the airport. Their presence reminded us of the fundamental role that emergency responders play in crisis management and in protecting our societies.

The afternoon continued at the Résidence Palace in a more informal and convivial setting. This moment of relaxation over drinks allowed everyone to reconnect with their community, share experiences without necessarily discussing trauma, and forge or reforge connections. Because beyond remembrance, rebuilding also occurs through these simple, human moments.

At the end of the day, a small group went to the Sonian Forest, a place of memory and nature, to recharge and refocus after the emotional intensity of the day.

Each person experiences this day in their own way. There is no single model for commemoration. This plurality of experiences is a strength, a richness that enables society to rebuild by learning from those whom history will never forget.

Finally, this ninth edition marks the beginning of the decade that will separate us from the Brussels attacks. In anticipation of the commemoration of the tenth anniversary in 2026, V-Europe is already attentive to the needs, ideas, and expectations of the victims and their loved ones. May this future milestone be envisioned with and for them, respecting individualities and aspiring to uphold a strong, peaceful memory focused on the future.
