Weekend of European Remembrance: Honoring the 20th Anniversary of the Madrid Bombings (2004)

10-11/03/2024

V-Europe organized a group of 10 Belgian victims and survivors of terrorism to travel to Madrid for the European tributes honoring all victims of terrorism. This year was particularly significant, marking the 20th anniversary of the wave of attacks that shook the country on March 11, 2004.

Madrid was struck by a series of coordinated bombings targeting four commuter trains during the morning rush hour. In total, 10 bombs exploded, killing 191 people and injuring over 2,000 others. These attacks are considered one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Europe.

We were warmly welcomed by the European Commission for this day of remembrance, attending tributes that brought together victims, political leaders, and the King of Spain. These two days provided a valuable opportunity for individuals affected by terrorism from around the world to come together, share their lived experiences, and discuss their journeys and future plans.

The paths to recovery are often fraught with obstacles, leaving many individuals to navigate their challenges alone with limited resources. During these emotionally charged moments, it is also a time to exchange perspectives and find strength in unity amidst adversity.
